Watch: First Trailer for ‘Youth’ from ‘Great Beauty’ Director Paolo Sorrentino

You will find Paolo Sorrentino‘s newest film Youth referred to as many things over the last 12 months or so, prior to this first trailer for the film being released I thought it was going to be called The Early Years, you can also see it referred to as In the Future and, if you’re Italian, as La giovinezza, but it appears Youth is how it will be referred to in English and it’s the second likely Cannes selection we’re getting our first look at today.

Michael Caine stars as Fred, Paul Dano as Mick, two old friends on vacation in an elegant hotel at the foot of the Alps. Fred, a composer and conductor, is now retired. Mick, a film director, is still working. They look with curiosity and tenderness on their children’s confused lives, Mick’s enthusiastic young writers, and the other hotel guests. While Mick scrambles to finish the screenplay for what he imagines will be his last important film, Fred has no intention of resuming his musical career. But someone wants at all costs to hear him conduct again. Rachel Weisz, Jane Fonda, Harvey Keitel, Tom Lipinski and Ed Stoppard co-star.

Sorrentino, as I’m sure many of you remember, directed The Great Beauty, which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language film in 2014. To say his follow-up is highly anticipated would be an understatement. In fact, it made my list of the 20 Most Anticipated Movies of 2015, have a look at the trailer below and let me know if it’s worth such excitement.

One thing is for certain, there has been no loss of cinematographic beauty from The Great Beauty to this one, man it looks wonderful.
