Oh, Chappie. Chappie, Chappie, Chappie. What is there to say about you today? Well, for starters, I decided to skim through the first trailer for the film and this new one that dropped today, which you can view below at your leisure, and strangely I have to say I think the film could actually be kind of fun. The key word there is “could,” as director Neill Blomkamp has fooled us before, but there seems to be a chance Chappie won’t be a complete waste of time. Of course, I may just as easily be wrong.
Now, maybe it’s just because today is Friday, or because I’m nearing the final stretch of studying for my next CPA exam, but I actually got a chuckle at the brief bit I saw of the latest trailer, though that’s partly due to Hugh Jackman‘s atrocious haircut. Apparently if you want to make me laugh, all you need to do is feature the Wolverine himself in a half-assed middle-schooler’s mullet. Who knew? From the synopsis:
Every child comes into the world full of promise, and none more so than Chappie: he is gifted, special, a prodigy. Like any child, Chappie will come under the influence of his surroundings – some good, some bad – and he will rely on his heart and soul to find his way in the world and become his own man. But there’s one thing that makes Chappie different from anyone else: he is a robot. The first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself.
Also, according to the plot synopsis, Chappie’s story “will change the way the world looks at robots and humans forever,” which is a silly thing to tack on to a synopsis, but alright. You can check out the trailer below, and be sure to mark your calendar because the film — which stars Sharlto Copley, Ninja Visser, Yolandi Visser, Dev Patel, and Sigourney Weaver alongside Jackman and his mullet — hits theaters March 6, which is the same day The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel arrives, so if ever you needed to satisfy your Dev Patel craving, the weekend of March 6 is the time to do it!
