Yesterday, we got ten Into the Woods, which will be released on December 25th. The new trailer, which you can watch below, has something the first trailer did not: singing. It always bothers me when marketing cronies are scared of advertising something as a musical, and thankfully, this particular trailer has plenty of singing.
Much like the featurette that appeared a couple of weeks ago, the two songs getting showcased in the marketing are the rousing opening number, which is some of the finest fifteen minutes ever written for a show, and Meryl Streep‘s take on “Stay with Me“. That song is a really moving moment in the show, and Streep looks like she will delivering the goods. I hope when the vocals get more belty, like in “Last Mignight“, she can stay on point. Also, her Witch’s rap could be pretty awesome.
I know I probably should not be as excited for this adaptation as I am. Marshall’s track record and the Disney banner leave a lot to be desired when it comes to exploring serious, human themes, like this show tackles. I just cannot help it. That Stephen Sondheim score really gets me. What he and book writer James Lapine (who also wrote the screenplay) created is a challenging look at our own faults and insecurities. Even if it ends up being a lackluster adaptation, some of that will still shine through. The material is too rich for it not too.

Into the Woods based on the Tony-winning original musical by James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim, surrounds a baker and his wife’s quest to break a witch’s curse in order to start a family. Along the way, they encounter several well-known fairy tale characters, and together they learn what happens after “happily ever after”.
