I know I am in the very small minority on this, but I cannot stand the Minions from the Despicable Me franchise. I find them highly irritating and obnoxious rather than adorable, and they serve no purpose to the stories. My skin crawls every time I hear their nonsense babble. I usually have this problem with any character created in a children’s film for the only use of being “cute”. The popularity of these particular iterations of that idea has spawned a spin-off movie called, of course, Minions. That spin-off, set to be released July 15, 2015, just got its first trailer, which you can watch below.
The trailer tells us these Minions actually have names, personalities and whatnot, but they are just the indistinguishable yellow pests we have seen in the previous two films. There is nothing in their personalities to differentiate them from one another, and I cannot imagine how ninety minutes of this could be entertaining. Comedic relief characters should be off to the side to provide, well, comedic relief. You do not put them front and center. May I remind you of what happened when Jack Sparrow was put upfront in the Pirates franchise… Yeah…
You can watch the new trailer below. The trailer features Queen and David Bowie’s “Under Pressure” and Jimi Hendrix’s “Foxy Lady”, which made me sad. I love those songs. The songs also do not make a lot of sense in the contexts they are used. But who cares? You recognize them, right?
The story of Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s Minions begins at the dawn of time. Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, Minions evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters. Continuously unsuccessful at keeping these masters–from T. rex to Napoleon–the Minions find themselves without someone to serve and fall into a deep depression.
But one Minion named Kevin has a plan, and he–alongside teenage rebel Stuart and lovable little Bob–ventures out into the world to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow.
The trio embarks upon a thrilling journey that ultimately leads them to their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill (Academy Award® winner Sandra Bullock), the world’s first-ever female super-villain. They travel from frigid Antarctica to 1960s New York City, ending in mod London, where they must face their biggest challenge to date: saving all of Minionkind…from annihilation.
