Disney has just debuted a new trailer for their upcoming live-action movie Maleficent and it includes Lana Del Rey‘s rendition of the classic Disney song “Once Upon a Dream” from the studio’s 1959 animated feature Sleeping Beauty.
The song will be featured during the film’s end credits, but don’t go thinking this is an early Oscar contender, as we all know, adaptations aren’t considered, no matter how good they are. Perhaps there’s another Grammy nomination in Del Rey’s future, just as she earned one for “Young and Beautiful” from The Great Gatsby last year. That is, after all, where this trailer premiered.
In the film, Angelina Jolie stars as the title character, a beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, with an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal — an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom–and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.
The film co-stars Miranda Richardson, Imelda Staunton, Kenneth Cranham, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Sharlto Copley, Lesley Manville, Brenton Thwaites and Vivienne Jolie-Pitt and is set to hit theaters on May 30.
