The latest trailer for Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom has been released and it features a new U2 song titled “Ordinary Love” (no, not a remake of Sade’s classic track), which seems almost too on-the-nose, but then again, if you’re playing the Oscar game, on-the-nose is exactly what the Academy is looking for. This one, however, has already had a weird life to it as it premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, but received virtually zero buzz, which you could blame on a variety of factors such as the first screening being cancelled about 45 minutes in, the second press screening taking place at 10:15 pm at night or the fact the film might simply not be anything more than a capably told biopic of a story we all feel we already know.
It’s expected Idris Elba will give a great performance in the lead role and there will be plenty of Oscar chatter once it does finally hit the screen on November 29, but I must be honest, I’m not particularly interested in it and the two hour and 23 minute running time isn’t helping matters.
