Hollywood is determined to make Chris Pine a “thing” as he not only already stars as Captain Kirk in J.J. Abrams‘ Star Trek franchise and was just cast as one of the bosses in Horrible Bosses 2, but he also has a second major franchise on his hands in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (Paramount; 12/25) based on Tom Clancy’s long-running CIA agent.
This new film begins before any of Clancy’s novels, establishing Ryan at a much younger age, from 9/11, through his tour of duty in Afghanistan, which scarred him forever, and into his early days in the Financial Intelligence Unit of the modern CIA where he becomes an analyst, under the guardianship of his handler, Harper (Kevin Costner).
When Ryan believes he’s uncovered a Russian plot to collapse the United States economy, he goes from being an analyst to becoming a spy and must fight to save his own life and those of countless others, while also trying to protect the thing that’s more important to him than anything, his relationship with his fiancée Cathy (Keira Knightley).
Kenneth Branagh directs and stars as the film’s villain. Check out the brand new international trailer below.
