And the attempt to capture the young adult audience via semi-popular young adult novel adaptations continues, this time with The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, an adaptation of Cassandra Clare’s best-selling novel.
The story is set in contemporary New York City and centers on Clary Fray (Lily Collins), a seemingly ordinary teenager, who discovers she is the descendant of a line of Shadowhunters, a secret cadre of young half-angel warriors locked in an ancient battle to protect our world from demons. After the disappearance of her mother, Clary must join forces with a group of Shadowhunters, who introduce her to a dangerous alternate New York called Downworld, filled with demons, warlocks, vampires, werewolves and other deadly creatures.
Now before you “Mortal Instruments” fans get all, This is more than just “semi-popular”, it’s a bestseller! I’m pretty sure the same could be said for the “Beautiful Creatures” franchise and we saw how that turned out.
There’s no budgetary information on this pic, but with Beautiful Creatures costing somewhere in the $80 million range I have a hard time believing this could have been any less. Along with Collins the film co-stars Lena Headey, Jared Harris, Aidan Turner, CCH Pounder, Jamie Campbell-Bower, Kevin Durand and Jonathan Rhys Meyers and was directed by Harald Zwart (The Karate Kid).
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is set to hit theaters on August 23, check out the latest trailer along with a couple of new posters directly below.
