Noah Baumbach‘s Frances Ha will hit theaters on May 17. The film stars Greta Gerwig and has been described as a valentine to New York City and, at the very least, seems to have been appreciated by those that saw it in Toronto last year. I, unfortunately, couldn’t fit it in the schedule.
The story centers on Frances (Gerwig) who lives in New York, but she doesn’t really have an apartment. Frances is an apprentice for a dance company, but she’s not really a dancer. Frances throws herself headlong into her dreams, even as their possible reality dwindles. Frances wants so much more than she has but lives her life with unaccountable joy and lightness. Frances Ha is a modern fable in which Baumbach explores New York, friendship, class, ambition, failure, and redemption.
Along with the Coen brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis, this is one of at least two higher profile black-and-white films hitting theaters this year. Frances Ha will most likely be seen by fewer audience members, but it’s an interesting little trend, even if it is a tiny one.
Today the trailer for the film premiered. Check it out below.
