‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ Trailer and Poster Have Arrived

Just under a year away from its December 14, 2012 release, Warner Bros. has debuted the first trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first of two upcoming films based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic novel with Lord of the Rings helmer Peter Jackson back behind the camera to bring Middle Earth back to the big screen.

The Hobbit follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakensheild. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers. Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever … Gollum. Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths ofguile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

Joining Freeman in the film are several names you’ll recognize from the Lord of the Rings trilogy along with some new faces including Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett, Elijah Wood, Andy Serkis, Ian Holm, Hugo Weaving, Orlando Bloom, Christopher Lee, Richard Armitage, John Callen, Stephen Fry, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Stephen Hunter, Graham McTavish, James Nesbitt, Lee Pace, Mikael Persbrandt, Aidan Turner, Luke Evans, Evangeline Lilly, Barry Humphries and Benedict Cumberbatch.

But let’s forget the formalities for now, here is the trailer and I’ve included the first teaser poster directly below that, which you can also check out in my gallery for the film along with a new banner right here.
