NSFW Trailer for Lars von Trier’s ‘Melancholia’ Arrives Out of the Blue

Talk about a pleasant morning surprise (afternoon if you’re on the East coast) as I wake up to the first trailer for Lars von Trier’s follow-up to Antichrist, the end of the world drama Melancholia. The film stars Kirsten Dunst, Alexander Skarsgard, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgard and Udo Kier with Dunst and Gainsbourg playing sisters whose lives are drifting apart as the universe spectacularly unravels in what Von Trier describes as a beautiful movie about the end of the world.

A different synopsis is not yet available, but the trailer gives a little better idea of what is going on in the film as Kirsten Dunst and Alexander Skarsgard are getting married and the voice over of a young child speaks to the nature of what is going on in the sky saying, “It’s a planet that has been hiding behind the sun, now it passes by us.”

Additionally, thanks to the trailer we learn John Hurt, Jesper Christensen and Brady Corbet are also in the film. If they had been mentioned in any casting updates before now I was unaware.

I’ve included a few more screenshots from the trailer below, but also know this is a trailer that’s not safe for work considering there is a little bit of Kirsten Dunst nudity in it. So, you’ve been warned if you’re watching this from your cubicle.

There is still no domestic release date available, but the timing of this trailer strongly suggests it will be at Cannes as the line-up will be announced six days from now on April 14. Stay tuned.
