Two films I would not have seen yet had I not attended the Cannes and Toronto International Film Festivals last year are Abbas Kiarostami’s Certified Copy starring Juliette Binoche and William Shimell and Massy Tadjedin’s Last Night starring Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, Eva Mendes and Guillaume Canet. Both are tremendous films and both will be coming to theaters later this year. Certified Copy already has a release date and will hit theaters on March 11 via IFC Films and Last Night is still without an official date, but Tribeca Film is picking up where Miramax left off and will give the feature a 2011 release.
First off the trailer for Certified Copy, a thought-provoking love story centered on a middle-aged English writer who meets a young French woman (Binoche) and jets off to San Gimignano with her. The trailer below is far simpler than the story it tells ever concedes to being. This is a film that will have you questioning every turn in the narrative and it’s one you’ll want to watch with someone else or risk being frustrated you have no one to discuss it with you.

Next is the trailer for Last Night, a film I credited in my Toronto Film Festival review saying, “To assume you know how the relationships in this story will play out means you are underestimating her script as she teases and keeps you on edge up and beyond the film’s last breath… Tadjedin has crafted a beautiful film and damn near created a romantic thriller out of a talky film about fidelity.”
The previous trailer I recommended readers didn’t watch as I felt it gave away too much of the story, but this is a much better cut. Should you be interested based on this trailer I can only assume this is a film you’re going to enjoy.
