‘Transformers,’ ‘Captain America’ and ‘Thor’ Trailers and More Expected During Super Bowl

The Hollywood Reporter brings word on the films expected to debut new trailers during this year’s Super Bowl and they are made up primarily of the usual suspects, tentpole features aimed at the masses.

Included are Paramount’s Super 8 directed by JJ Abrams, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger. Disney will release a new trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Universal has a spot lined up for Jon Favreau’s Cowboys and Aliens. Finally, Relativity will issue a trailer for the Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro feature Limitless.

While those are the trailers that will be seen during the game, others will be seen during pregame including Columbia’s Just Go With It, Battle: Los Angeles and Priest, plus a spot for The Eagle from Focus Features. Paramount, however isn’t stopping at just game time domination as they will have promos for their animated features Rango and Kung Fu Panda 2 front and center.

Apparently Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox have not lined up any promotion, which seems a bit odd to me considering it’s a perfect way for Fox to use the fact the game is on their network and issue a trailer for X-Men: First Class. Additionally, for Warner Bros. to pass up an opportunity to debut trailer for The Hangover: Part II, Green Lantern and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is a bit of a surprise. Not to mention the March 25 release of Sucker Punch. Oh wait, guys watching football wouldn’t be interested in scantily clad women shooting machine guns. Nevermind.

I’m also wondering why Universal isn’t using the time for a trailer for Fast Five, a movie that I would suspect would do gangbusters with a football audience.

Of course, there is always a question of the money as the Hollywood Reporter article quotes rates for the February 6 big game on Fox are running about $3 million per 30-second spot. That ain’t chump change. It also goes to show that when we’re talking about a film’s budget just how much we aren’t considering when we don’t get solid numbers on how much was spent on marketing.

Any of the titles above piquing your interest?

Like previous years (Super Bowl XL, Super Bowl LII, Super Bowl LIII, Super Bowl XLIV) I’ll be covering all of them for you so no need to look too far.
