How many of you picked up Beauty and the Beast on Blu-ray last week? I wrote an exhaustive review and even though it isn’t necessarily my favorite Disney animated film I have pretty much vowed to make sure I own every Disney animated film that comes out and just wondered if there is anyone else out there with a similar mindset.
To this point I own Beauty and the Beast, Snow White, Up, WALL•E, Monsters, Inc., Pinocchio, Sleeping Beauty, Ratatouille, Toy Story and Toy Story 2 on Blu-ray, not to mention my collection of Disney Animation DVDs. Most of my DVDs and Blu-rays I store in binders, tossing out the cases and cover art, but I have a giant DVD cabinet filled with the titles I want to make sure are on display for all to see. Along with my Criterion titles, box sets and other special editions, my Disney releases are among those I make sure are on display and in 2011 it seems at least two more classic Disney releases are coming to Blu-ray. Trailers for each were included on the Beauty and the Beast Blu-ray and have now found their way online.
While neither has a confirmed released date as of yet, Disney will release the Blu-ray edition of Bambi in Spring of 2011 and The Lion King in Fall 2011. Personally, Bambi isn’t a particular favorite of mine, but Disney’s restoration of it back in 2005 was excellent and I’m sure on Blu-ray the multiplane camera technique will probably give the film some impressive depth. However, The Lion King is one of my all-time favorite Disney films and I can’t wait to see it high definition.
