The Big Johnson teaser trailer details the life of Johnson, who was the frontman of two bands, Dean and the Weenies and the Velvet Mafia. The film’s trailer also tackles Johnson’s status as an openly gay rock star and Johnson’s status as a sex worker, as well as his mysterious death in 2007 from an apparent drug overdose.

The Big Johnson is set to have its premiere at the Slamdance Film Festival on February 21, 2025, and will also screen on February 21 at the festival as well. Wide release information is not available as of now.
The film is directed by Lola Rocknrolla, a close friend and bandmate of Johnson’s in the early 2000s, and features appearances by Dean Johnson, Jackie Beat, Sherry Vine, Lady Bunny, Taylor Mac, Mario Diaz, Kevin Aviance, Heather Litteer, and Beth Johnson.
“Dean Johnson, drag queen, rock star, LGBTQI activist, junkie, genius, escort then John Doe. How does someone so famous in New York die as an unknown in DC?” reads the film’s official synopsis. “The Big Johnson explores the incredible highs and the crushing lows of Dean Johnson’s life and untimely death. Was it murder? Was it an accident? We may never know, but what is for sure is that Dean and “the Big Johnson” changed New York City and all who knew him forever.”
