The first trailer for Bleecker Street’s The Friend has been released.
The Friend is a new Bleeker Street movie directed by David Siegel and Scott McGehee. Starring Bill Murray and Naomi Watts, the film will be released in theaters nationwide this coming April.

What is The Friend about?
“In The Friend, adapted from the bestselling novel, Iris (Naomi Watts) finds her comfortable New York life upended when her friend and mentor Walter (Bill Murray) bequeaths her his Great Dane, Apollo,” the synopsis for the movie reads. “The regal yet intractable beast is a constant reminder of Walter and causes various problems— yet as Iris bonds with Apollo, she begins to cope with her past, her lost friend, and her own creative inner life.”
Along with Watts and Murray, the cast of the movie includes Sarah Pidgeon, Carla Gugino, Constance Wu, Noma Dumezweni, Ann Dowd, Felix Solis, Owen Teague, and Bing.
McGehee and Siegel wrote the script for the film. Their past filmography includes 1994’s Suture, 2001’s The Deep End, 2005’s Bee Season, 2008’s Uncertainty, 2012’s What Maise Knew, and, most recently, 2021’s Montana Story.
Siegel and McGehee also serve as producers alongside Liza Chasin and Mike Spreter. Watts serves as an executive producer, as does Margaret Chernin.
Watts recently played Babe Paley in 2024’s Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, while she also starred in Infinite Storm and Goodnight Mommy in 2022. Murray, meanwhile, reprised his Dr. Peter Venkman role in 2024’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and will also soon be seen in Dito Montiel’s crime comedy movie Riff Raff, which hits theaters on February 28.
The Friend will be released exclusively in New York City theaters on March 28, 2025. It will then expand nationwide on April 4, 2025.
