What is Ash about?

“On the mysterious planet of Ash, Riya (Eiza González) awakens to find her crew slaughtered. When a man named Brion (Aaron Paul) arrives to rescue her, an ordeal of psychological and physical terror ensues while Riya and Brion must decide if they can trust one another to survive,” the synopsis for the movie reads.

The screenplay for Ash was written by Jonni Remmler. Nate Bolotin and Matthew Metcalfe both serve as producers on the film, while Neill Blomkamp serves as an executive producer. Blomkamp is known for directing 2009’s District 9, 2013’s Elysium, 2015’s Chappie, 2021’s Demonic, and, most recently, 2023’s Gran Turismo.

Other executive producers include Nick Spicer, Maxime Cottray, Aram Tertzakian, Maile Daughtery, Dave Brown, and Adam Riback.

Along with González (The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, 3 Body Problem) and Paul (Breaking Bad, BoJack Horseman), the cast includes Iko Uwais (The Raid: Redemption, The Night Comes for Us), Kate Elliott (30 Days of Night, Fresh Meat), and Beulah Koale (Hawaii Five-0, Thank You for Your Service). Flying Lotus also has a role in the movie. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tessa Thompson were initially cast in the movie when it was announced in 2022; however, they were replaced by González and Paul.

Flying Lotus directed a 2017 anthology movie called Kuso (credited as Steve), while he also directed the “Ozzy’s Dungeon” segment in 2022’s V/H/S/99. His music has been featured in projects such as Grand Theft Auto V, True Blood, Gossip Girl, Workaholics, Atlanta, Insecure, Sleeping Dogs, 2010’s Date Night, and 2013’s The Fifth Estate, among other titles.

Ash will be released in United States theaters on March 21, 2025, from RLJE Films.
