What is Opus about?
“A young writer is invited to the remote compound of a legendary pop star who mysteriously disappeared 30 years ago,” the synopsis for the film reads. “Surrounded by the star’s cult of sycophants and intoxicated journalists, she finds herself in the middle of his twisted plan.”
Edebiri — known for starring in FX’s The Bear, among other titles — is playing the young writer named Ariel in the film, while Malkovich is the missing pop star, whose name is Moretti.
According to the Sundance Film Festival, the movie is “bold, fun, and flashy pop-horror” and features “eye-catching, synthy musical numbers.” The description further reads, “Opus offers an electric, clever indictment of the literal cult of celebrity, presenting characters and dangers within a symphonic ambiance — giving way to a foreboding ease through which power is generated and embedded within pop culture.”
The cast of the movie also includes Amber Midthunder (Prey), Murray Bartlett (The White Lotus), Juliette Lewis (Yellowjackets), Stephanie Suganami (Power Book II: Ghost), Young Mazino (Beef), Tatanka Means (Killers of the Flower Moon), and Tony Hale (Arrested Development).
The-Dream and Nile Rodgers have created original songs for the film. They also serve as executive producers alongside Charles D. King and Sara Newkirk. Collin Creighton, Brad Weston, Poppy Hanks, Jelani Johnson, and Josh Bachove serve as producers.
Opus will premiere in the Midnight section of the 2025 Sundance Film Festival on January 27, 2025. It will then be released in United States theaters on March 14, 2025, from A24.
