What is Under the Crystal Sky about?
Inspired by the historical 1561 celestial phenomenon over Nuremberg, the film centers around an Indigenous family’s encounter with a UFO in the 1800s. It is directed by Matt Hartley from a screenplay he co-wrote with Shiv Rajagopal.
“Under the Crystal Sky follows an Indigenous family grappling with the aftermath of witnessing a celestial phenomenon and a UFO crash near their home,” reads the film’s official synopsis. “Their lives unravel as fear mounts, mysterious events unfold, and a violent conflict with American military forces looms. Inspired by the historical 1561 celestial phenomenon over Nuremberg, the film reimagines history through the lens of Indigenous culture and speculative sci-fi.”
The ensemble cast includes Sewwandi V as Alona, Jacquelin Arroyo as Ayita, Joseph Williams as Alo, Jayd Swendseid, Sean Whaling, and John Walker Jones. The sci-fi adventure period series is produced by Hartley, Rajagopal, and Arpi Nazaryan, with Matthew Helderman, Scott Wessels, and Luke Taylor serving as executive producers.
