What is Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu horror movie about?

“Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake,” the synopsis reads.

Eggers is known for directing 2015’s The Witch, 2019’s The Lighthouse, and 2022’s The Northman. Eggers also wrote the screenplay for his new Nosferatu movie.

The original Nosferatu is a silent film that starred Max Schreck as Count Orlok. The film is an unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s 1897 Dracula movie. While the film made several significant changes from the novel, Stoker’s heirs sued production company Prana Film over the unofficial adaptation. A court ruling ordered all copies of Nosferatu to be destroyed; however, several copies survived and the film is now considered to be an influential cinema classic.

Eggers’ version of Nosferatu stars Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok. The cast also includes Nicholas Hoult as Thomas Hutter, Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen Hutter, Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Friedrich Harding, Emma Corrin as Anna Harding, Willem Dafoe as Prof. Albin Eberhart Von Franz, Ralph Ineson as Dr. Wilhelm Sievers, and Simon McBurney as Herr Knock.

Dafoe notably played Schreck in 2000’s Shadow of the Vampire, which was directed by E. Elias Merhige and told the story of the making of the 1922 film. Dafoe was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance.

Nosferatu will be released in United States theaters on December 25, 2024, from Focus Features.
