What else do we know about M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap?

“A father and teen daughter attend a pop concert, where they realize they’re at the center of a dark and sinister event,” the synopsis for the movie reads.

Along with Hartnett, Trap stars Ariel Donoghue, Saleka Shyamalan, Hayley Mills, and Allison Pill.

In addition to writing and directing the film, Shyamalan produces Trap alongside Ashwin Rajan and Marc Bienstock. Steven Schneider serves as the executive producer.

Speaking with Empire Magazine, Shyamalan said he pitched Trap as The Silence of the Lambs if it was set at a Taylor Swift concert. He also said it was inspired by a real-life sting operation, Operation Flagship, that occurred at the Washington Convention Center in December 1985.

“It was hilarious,” Shyamalan said. “The cops were literally cheerleaders and mascots. These guys were dancing as they came in. And they were all caught. It was so twisted and funny.”

Shyamalan also said, “I really do believe in the original movie. I want the industry to move towards more original storytelling. I think audiences would really like it. Look, I know there’s safety in IP. But it’s really important that we come to the movies and see something we’ve never seen before. I’ll keep fighting for that.”

He further praised Saleka Shyamalan’s performance as the pop star Lady Raven in the film, saying, “I directed an entire concert! And it wasn’t just a thing in the background. It’s equally important. There is no pretend concert going on. I love the idea of cinema as windows within windows. One of the reasons to come see the movie at the movie theatre is because there’s literally a real concert that you can see nowhere except in that movie.”

Trap releases in United States theaters on August 9, 2024, from Warner Bros. Pictures.
