What is Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa about?
“Lhakpa Sherpa is probably the greatest Everest climber you’ve never heard of,” the synopsis for the documentary reads. “Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa tracks her storied mountaineering career against her record-breaking 10th summit to reveal a rich personal history – from her childhood as a girl denied an education in rural Nepal, to her experience as an immigrant in America and survivor of intimate partner violence, to her fight to live as a fearless example to her teenage daughters. Through it all, Lhakpa climbs – her incredible strength and resilience inspired by her own mother goddess of the universe – Chomolungma, Mt. Everest.”
The movie is directed by Lucy Walker, who got her start directing episodes of Blue’s Clues before then going on to direct documentaries such as 2002’s Devil’s Playground, 2013’s The Crash Reel, and more. She’s been nominated for two Academy Awards for 2011’s Waste Land (Best Documentary, Features) and 2012’s The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom (Best Documentary, Short Subjects).
The film is produced by Charlie Corwin for SK Global Entertainment, Michael D. Ratner and Miranda Sherman for OBB Pictures, and Dalia Burde and Christopher Newman for Avocados and Coconuts. SK Global Entertainment’s Sidney Kimmel, Brian Kornreich, and Jo Henriquez, along with OBB Pictures’ Scott Ratner and Avocados and Coconuts’ Amani King and Lucy Walker, serve as executive producers.
The Mountain Queen documentary will be released on Netflix on July 31, 2024.
