Vertical has also released an official poster for The Exorcism, which can be seen below. “They were making a cursed movie,” it reads. “They were warned not to. They should have listened.”
What is The Exorcism about?
“Academy Award-winner Russell Crowe stars as Anthony Miller, a troubled actor who begins to unravel while shooting a supernatural horror film,” the official synopsis reads. “His estranged daughter, Lee (Ryan Simpkins), wonders if he’s slipping back into his past addictions or if there’s something more sinister at play.”
The Exorcism is directed by Joshua John Miller, who wrote the screenplay for 2015’s The Final Girls. Miller co-wrote the screenplay for The Exorcism with M.A. Fortin, while Scream’s Kevin Williamson produced the movie alongside Ben Fast and Bill Block.
Crowe is no stranger to exorcism movies, as he played Father Gabriele Amorth in 2023’s The Pope’s Exorcist. He also played Dr. Henry Jekyll/Mr. Edward “Eddie” Hyde in 2017’s The Mummy and Tom Cooper in 2020’s Unhinged. Outside of horror, Crowe has starred in 1997’s L.A. Confidential, 2000’s Gladiator, 2001’s A Beautiful Mind, 2016’s The Nice Guys, and many more movies.
Along with Crowe and Simpkins (Fear Street, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off), The Exorcism stars Sam Worthington (Avatar, Terminator Salvation), Chloe Bailey (Priase This, Swarm), Adam Goldberg (Fargo, The Equalizer) and David Hyde Pierce (Fraiser, Wet Hot American Summer).
Formerly titled The Georgetown Project, The Exorcism releases in United States theaters on June 7, 2024, from Vertical. Shudder has also acquired the Pay-1 rights to the film, meaning it will likely be released on the horror-focused streaming service at a later date.
