Searchlight Pictures has dropped the first teaser for Empire of Light, the upcoming romance drama starring Oscar winner Olivia Colman and Top Boy actor Micheal Ward. This serves as director Sam Mendes’ follow-up directorial feature since the theatrical and critical success of the acclaimed 2019 war drama 1917.
The Empire of Light teaser, which you can check out below, highlights the budding romance between employees at an old cinema on the South Coast of England. It also teases the troubles and issues that will come in the way of their love story.

Empire of Light is written and directed by Sam Mendes (Revolutionary Road, Skyfall). The film stars Olivia Colman (The Lost Daughter), Micheal Ward (Blue Story), Tom Brooke (Sherlock), Tanya Moodie (Motherland), Hannah Onslow, Crystal Clarke (Sanditon), Toby Jones (The Girl), and Colin Firth (The King’s Speech).
“Set in an English seaside town in the early 1980s, the romance drama is a powerful and poignant story about human connection and the magic of cinema,” reads the synopsis.

Empire of Light is produced by Mendes and Pippa Harris. It also reunites Mendes with Academy Award-winning cinematographer Roger Deakins.
The film is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 9, just in time for the awards season.
