Fully Restored Star Trek: The Motion Picture Sets Paramount+ Release Date

More than four decades since the theatrical release of Robert Wise’s Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Paramount Pictures finally announces the long-awaited release date of the fully restored Director’s Edition of the acclaimed action sci-fi film. It will be available for streaming on April 5, exclusively on Paramount+ in 4K Ultra HD on supported devices and platforms.

Following its Paramount+ debut, the newly restored Star Trek: The Motion Picture—The Director’s Edition will then be arriving on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in September from Paramount Home Entertainment. The announcement also came with the release of the remastered version’s trailer, which you can check out below, giving fans a glimpse of the film’s new high-quality effects.

“I couldn’t be prouder and more thrilled to have completed the film in 4K,” producer David C. Fein said in a statement. “Paramount offered unprecedented access to the original elements and exceptional support and the results are stunning.  Utilizing the latest discoveries and innovations of modern film production, The Director’s Edition delivers so much more today than was previously possible.  It’s an adventure you’ll never forget!”

In addition, Paramount Pictures has partnered with Fathom Events to give Star Trek fans the opportunity to see the newly remastered version on the big screen for the first time. Tickets for the exclusive two-day theatrical event on May 22 and May 25 will be going on sale next month on April 8 at FathomEvents.com.

“The U.S.S. Enterprise boldly debuted on the big screen with the cast of the original Star Trek series, including William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, George Takei, Nichelle Nichols, Walter Koenig, and James Doohan,” reads the synopsis.  “Meticulously restored and remastered, with enhanced visual effects and state-of-the-art sound, this definitive vision of director Robert Wise has been optimized for a new generation of fans. When an unidentified alien intruder destroys three powerful Klingon cruisers, Admiral James T. Kirk (Shatner) returns to the helm of a newly transformed U.S.S. Enterprise to take command and confront an alien spacecraft of enormous power heading toward Earth.”

The newest version of  Star Trek: The Motion Picture—The Director’s Edition was assembled and restored by Fein and preservationist Mike Matessino, who both previously worked with the late Robert Wise in 2001 for its first restoration. Visual effects supervisor Daren Dochterman was also involved in recreating the effects for the beloved film.
