Netflix has dropped the official trailer for the upcoming comedy-drama film titled The Starling, starring Oscar nominee Melissa McCarthy and Emmy winner Chris O’Dowd. The film will have its world premiere next month at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival. The premiere will then be followed by a limited theatrical release on September 17 and will be available for streaming on Netflix on September 24.
The Starling trailer, which you can check out below, features a couple trying to cope with the grief that comes with the loss of their baby. It highlights how they both have their own ways of dealing with the tragic loss which has also been affecting their relationship.

The Starling is directed by Theodore Melfi from a screenplay written by Matt Harris. The film is being led by Melissa McCarthy and Chris O’Dowd, who both previously starred in comedy films such as Bridesmaids, and This Is 40. The upcoming film will also reunite Melfi with McCarthy and O’Dowd who have also appeared together in the filmmaker’s 2014 comedy-drama St. Vincent.
The official synopsis reads: “After Lilly (Melissa McCarthy) suffers a loss, a battle with a territorial bird (The Starling) over dominion of her garden provides an unlikely avenue for her grief and the courage to heal her relationships and rediscover her capacity for love.”

The Starling also stars Kevin Kline, Timothy Olyphant, Daveed Diggs, Skyler Gisondo, Loretta Devine, Laura Harrier, Rosalind Chao, Kimberly Quinn. It is produced by Melfi, Dylan Sellers, Chris Parker, and Kimberly Quinn.
McCarthy was most recently seen in Netflix’s superhero film Thunder Force and will next star in Disney’s live-action movie The Little Mermaid. Meanwhile, O’Dowd will next be seen in Francis Lawrence’s fantasy adventure Slumberland starring alongside Jason Momoa.
