Walt Disney Animation Studios has released the first teaser trailer for their forthcoming fantasy animated movie titled Encanto, which hails from acclaimed Zootopia filmmakers Byron Howard and Jared Bush along with Charise Castro Smith. The video transports viewers into the magical Casa Madrigal, the home of an exceptionally gifted family who each member possesses special powers including superhuman strength and shapeshifting abilities. It also introduces us to the film’s main character in the form of Mirabel, the only Madrigal child who didn’t get a unique ability. On top of its teaser, the studio has also revealed its first poster and full voice cast which will be led by Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Stephanie Beatriz as the voice of Mirabel.
The original film is scheduled to make its debut on November 24. Its current theatrical release date pits Encanto against three other competitors in the form of Sony’s Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, STXfilms’ National Champions, and Ridley Scott’s true crime biopic Gucci.

Disney’s Encanto tells the tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. In the film, the magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift from super strength to the power to heal—every child except one, Mirabel. But when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, Mirabel decides that she, the only ordinary Madrigal, might just be her exceptional family’s last hope.
“Mirabel is a really funny, loving character who also deeply yearns for something more,” Beatriz said in a statement. “She’s also not afraid to stand up for what she knows is right—something I love and relate to very much.
She continued, “I’m Colombian on my father’s side, and playing this role fills me with immense pride. As a Disney kid, I’d burn through my VHS tapes and adored every single magical story that the world of Disney introduced me to. I learned in those that stories that anything is possible, especially if you believe in magic and the goodness rooted deep inside us all.”
The animated film will feature a voice cast led by Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, In the Heights) as Mirabel, an ordinary 15-year-old who’s struggling to find her place in her family. Joining her are María Cecilia Botero, Wilmer Valderrama, Adassa, Diane Guerrero, Mauro Castillo, Angie Cepeda, Jessica Darrow, Rhenzy Feliz and Carolina Gaitan.

Encanto is directed by Zootopia helmers Byron Howard and Jared Bush from a screenplay co-written by Bush with co-director Charise Castro Smith. The filmmakers were deeply inspired by their research trip to Colombia during early development of Encanto, as well as their continuous work with a group of expert consultants assembled through the course of the film’s production.
The film will feature all-new songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton, Moana) including an original song titled “Colombia, Mi Encanto,” performed by Latin Grammy winner Carlos Vives. It is produced by Clark Spencer and Yvett Merino.
