Lionsgate has released the behind-the-scenes featurette for their upcoming Kurt Warner biopic drama American Underdog, starring Zachary Levi, Anna Paquin, and Dennis Quaid. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on December 10, 2021.
The American Underdog featurette, which you can check out below along with the first official photos, provides us our first look at the Shazam! star’s portrayal of the NFL icon as well as the first footage of the inspirational sports drama. It also features interviews from Levi and Paquin along with Kurt and Brenda Warner as they talked about the incredible true story and what it’s like to translate it onto screen.

Based on interviews with Warner and his memoir, “All Things Possible: My Story of Faith, Football and the First Miracle Season, American Underdog tells the incredible true story of Kurt Warner, who went from stocking shelves at a supermarket to become a two-time NFL MVP, Super Bowl champion, and Hall of Fame quarterback. The film chronicles Warner’s unique story and years of challenges and setbacks that could have derailed his aspirations to become an NFL player, and when his dreams seemed all but out of reach, it is only with the support of his wife, Brenda and the encouragement of his family that Warner perseveres and finds the strength to show the world the champion that he already is inside. American Underdog is an inspirational story that demonstrates that anything is possible when you have faith, family and determination.

The film stars Zachary Levi (Shazam! Fury of the Gods), Anna Paquin (True Blood), and Dennis Quaid (The Right Stuff), along with Cindy Hogan, Ser’Darius Blain, Adam Baldwin, Bruce McGill, Danny Vinson, Chance Kelly, Hayden Zaller, Cora Kate Wilkerson, and Nic Harris.

American Underdog will be directed and co-written by Jon and Andrew Erwin (I Can Only Imagine, I Still Believe) with David Aaron Cohen (Friday Night Lights) also serving as the writer. The Erwin Brothers are also attached to produce the project via their Kingdom Story banner alongside Mark Ciardi (Invincible, The Rookie) and Kevin Downes, with Kurt and wife Brenda Warner attached to co-produce. Jim Miller and Chelsea Kujawa are set to oversee the project in behalf of Lionsgate.
This project marks the latest collaboration between Levi and the writing-directing team of the Erwin brothers, who are also working together on another Lionsgate pic titled The Unbreakable Boy.
