Searchlight Pictures has released the official trailer for director Michael Showalter’s upcoming biopic drama The Eyes of Tammy Faye, starring Academy Award nominees Jessica Chastain and Andrew Garfield. The video highlights the rise and fall of Tammy Faye and Jim Bakker, a former televangelist couple who were known for hosting The PTL Club during the early 70s up to the late 80s.
The film is scheduled to make its debut in theaters on Friday, September 17. It’s current release date sees The Eyes of Tammy Faye going up against Paramount Pictures’ live-action film adaptation of Clifford the Big Red Dog.

Based on Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato’s documentary of the same name, the film tells an intimate look at the extraordinary and outlandish rise, fall and redemption of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker. In the 1970s and ’80s, Tammy Faye and her husband, Jim Bakker, rose from humble beginnings to create the world’s largest religious broadcasting network and theme park, and were revered for their message of love, acceptance and prosperity. Tammy Faye was legendary for her indelible eyelashes, her idiosyncratic singing, and her eagerness to embrace people from all walks of life. However, it wasn’t long before financial improprieties, scheming rivals, and scandal toppled their carefully constructed empire.
The Eyes of Tammy Faye stars Academy Award-nominated actors Jessica Chastain (The Help) as Tammy Faye Bakker and Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) along with Emmy winner Cherry Jones (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Tammy’s mother Rachel, Vincent D’Onofrio (Daredevil) as Jerry Falwell, Sam Jaeger (Parenthood) as Roe Messner, Gabriel Olds (Surrogates) as Pat Robertson, Mark Wystrach (Johnny Christ) as Gary Paxton, Chandler Head as Young Tammy Faye, and Fredric Lehne as Fred Grover.

The Eyes of Tammy Faye is directed by Michael Showalter (The Big Sick) from a script by Abe Sylvia. Producers are Chastain and Kelly Carmichael through their Freckle Films production banner along with Gigi Pritzker and Rachel Shane through their Madison Wells Media.
