A Disturbance in the Force documentary is still currently in production with Coon and Kozak trying to get in touch with more crew members of the special and are also aiming to secure potential interviews with Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill or even The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau.
“Most attention on the Holiday Special just focuses on how bad it is and doesn’t go deeper,” Coon said in a statement. “Our film is not going to be 90 minutes of dumping on it because no one wants to watch that. We’re gone really deep in the research and like an onion, there are a lot more layers as to how the Special happened than you would expect.”
He teased, “We were also able to find a never before released audio interview with Peter Mayhew talking about the Special along with over 15 hours of audio interviews recorded over twenty years ago with over a dozen people who worked on the Holiday Special. The recordings include others who passed away that we thought we’d never be able to give a voice in the film.”
The docufilm is produced by Kyle Newman and Adam F. Goldberg. The directors are hoping to release the film just in time for next year’s Life Day celebration.

Directed by Steve Binder, the Star Wars Holiday Special was said to be set between the events of A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back and was centered around Chewbacca’s Wookie tradition of Life Day. It featured the franchise’ main stars including Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and more. Due to its negative reception, the cast and George Lucas have always been trying to deny or forget the special’s existence whenever it is being brought up to them.
Star Wars have recently scored another holiday special on Disney+ titled The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special, which is now available for streaming, where Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron, Rose Tico and Chewbacca have gathered together to celebrate Life Day.
