The film, a sequel to the 2016 short film of the same name, stars Amell (The Duff, The X-Files), Sung Kang (Fast and Furious) and Stephen Amell (Arrow, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows), who also executive produced the short and is set to do the same on the feature-length follow-up.
The story follows a young man with special powers (Amell) struggling to find work as a day laborer. After a dispute over payment, he finds himself in a confrontation with a police officer (Kang) and the autonomous robots backing him up. Code 8 takes place in a world where 4% of the population are born with some type of supernatural ability. Instead of being wealthy superheroes, most ‘specials’ live in poverty and resort to crime, forcing the police to become more militarized.

Director Jeff Chan, who co-wrote the film with producer Chris Paré, had previously helmed live-action shorts for Activision’s Call of Duty franchise. Following the release of the 2016 short, an Indiegogo campaign went underway to acquire funding for the feature-length project, with its original goal set for $200,000 and was quickly overachieved by reaching $1 million shortly after its start, eventually reaching over $2 million towards the start of production.
Thus far the film has premiered at the Sitges Film Festival in Spain early October and is set to premiere in Canada on December 13.
