The trailer for El Chicano is here, and it’s got vengeance on its mind. The film, from director Joe Carnahan (The Grey, The A-Team) takes the typical superhero/viglante formula and places it over a violent crime drama about the rising power of Mexican drug cartels. You can check out the trailer in the post below!
When L.A.P.D. Detective Diego Hernandez (Raúl Castillo) is assigned a career-making case investigating a vicious cartel, he uncovers links to his brother’s supposed suicide and a turf battle that’s about to swallow his neighborhood. Torn between playing by the book and seeking justice, he resurrects the masked street legend El Chicano. Now, out to take down his childhood buddy turned gang boss, he sets off a bloody war to defend his city and avenge his brother’s murder.
While borrowing from more familiar characters like Batman, Carnahan may inject new life into the morally gray character who’s out for revenge by casting a wider cultural net about the role that mythological protectors play in other cultures. In addition to Castillo, the film stars Aimee Garcia (Dexter), Jose Pablo Cantillo (Crank), David Castañeda (Sicario: Day of the Soldado), and comedian George Lopez.
El Chicano races into theaters on May 3.
