With 2014’s Nightcrawler writer/director Dan Gilroy showed the seedy underbelly of Los Angeles where violent crime and local media intersect — and overlap. In the legal drama Roman J. Israel, Esq., he used the city as a backdrop for the stubbornness of social change. Now, the filmmaker is showing an all-new side to the City of Angels with the Netflix horror/thriller Velvet Buzzsaw. You can check out the trailer in the player below!
A thriller set in the shallow, vapid world of L.A.’s contemporary art scene, where big money artists and mega-collectors pay a high price when art collides with commerce. After a series of paintings are found in a dead hermit’s apartment, they become all the rage, before their supernatural powers slowly start creeping off of the canvas and into real-life.
