‘Wicker Park’ Movie Review (2004)

Josh Hartnett and Diane Kruger literally go looking for love in this re-make of the French film “L’Appartment”, I do not speak French, but I think that means The Apartment.

Matthew (Hartnett) is obsessed with his lost love Lisa (Kruger), who has mysteriously disappeared from his life. Two years after he had last seen her, he thinks he has found her again. Trying to track her down, he learns the sorted truth about her disappearance.

One of the good things about this film is the way it bounces back and forth in time, and different pieces of the story are told from different character’s perspective. A lot of times that ends up becoming a recipe for disaster but here it helps to keep the story fresh and interesting, unfortunately the pace still remains too slow.

There are way too many close calls between these two “lost” lovers. They will almost see each other, but just miss. I wanted to yell at the screen, “Just turn around, she’s right behind you!” Ahh, but alas he just misses her, I guess it has to be that way, or the movie would be over.

The acting for the most part is average, Hartnett is good at times, and Matthew Lillard is still trying to prove he should be allowed in films without animated characters. The ladies are not much better with unremarkable performances by Rose Byrne and Diane Kruger both of which appeared in Warner Bros. epic
