‘Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle’ Movie Review (2004)

In a movie searching to answer the age-old question; now that you have made it through college, what do you do? Two twenty something stoners go on a quest for White Castle hamburgers in a whirlwind adventure through New Jersey, in the appropriately titled, Harold and Kumar go to White Castle.

Enter our two characters, recent college graduates, Harold (John Cho), a Korean junior investment banker, and Kumar (Kal Pen), an Indian avoiding med-school. Throughout the movie and the streets of New Jersey, they learn that the real question after college is not what are you going to do, but who are you?

Alright, the movie is not very serious, and to pretend it is more than just a wacky comedy would be to misrepresent it.

The movie is, however, a somewhat fresh look at a recent comedic trend, which is the destination, road trip based picture. The movie manages to stay fresh and buck the normal trend as Harold and Kumar are not two idiot white guys, and are instead very intelligent minorities who just continue running into trouble. They are people destined to be successful and are simply struggling with the reality of growing up on their way.

Including a hilarious cameo by Neal Patrick Harris, yes that’s right, Doogie Howser, MD, playing himself, fans of movies such as Road Trip, Half Baked or Supertroopers will enjoy a great deal of plain stupid humor. However, while being treated to toilet jokes and jokes based on typical stereotypes, the film also has some very original and clever moments.

This movie is perfect for the audience it is hoping to draw, which is the let’s get stoned and see a movie college crowd, but it is also funny for the rest of us.
