Based on the popular 70s television show Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson step into the shoes of the cop duo Starsky & Hutch and in expected Stiller fashion Starsky & Hutch contains a lot of easy-come, easy-go comedy.
Not being a huge fan of Stiller I had my preconceived expectations for this one and was happily proved wrong, some of the time.
There isn’t much of a story here that wouldn’t be expected as the duo get teamed together, get in trouble while on the case, and end up saving the day. Even though the obvious is here, luckily Stiller and Wilson aren’t always the main focus.
The biggest plus had to be Vince Vaughn, with his unique style of delivery, which makes many of his comments funny just as they did in Old School. Also, the part of Huggy Bear, played by Snoop Dogg, is not a positive for Snoop’s acting, which we all can pretty much agree is bad, but for his ability to be the focus of several jokes.
The best scene in the film may be when they are applying a wire to his body while he stands there with just his boxers on and he looks as if he couldn’t weigh more than 130 pounds soaking wet.
Overall Starsky & Hutch gives nothing more than can be expected but it does deliver some laughs and a couple of scenes adapted from the TV show definitely drew a large amount of laughs from the audience, particularly a rousing applause started when Paul Michael Glaser and David Soul, the orginal Starsky & Hutch, made a cameo appearance, but being someone who didn’t watch the show I wasn’t too impressed and didn’t understand all the fuss.
If you are a fan of Stiller this one will definitely be one for you, and if you enjoy seeing Owen Wilson playing the same character in every movie with just a different role then you won’t get any surprises here.
If I were to recommend this film I would have to recommend it to Ben Stiller fans, but other than that it is nothing more than a good rental.
