I was not a fan of the first Barbershop film as I thought there was not enough Cedric and just too little comedy with a cast that spelled success. Nevertheless the film did well and sparked a sequel that puts the original to shame.
Everyone is back, Calvin (Ice Cube), Eddie (Cedric the Entertainer), Terri (Eve), Jimmy (Thomas), Isaac (Garity), Ricky (Ealy), and Dinka (Howze), and I must admit that the only truly good thing about the first film is that you know what all these characters are about.
Don’t touch Terri’s apple juice and don’t get Eddie yappin’.
Now, once again, Calvin’s Barbershop is trouble as the neighborhood is growing and a Nappy Cutz is being put up across the street adding competition to the neighborhood that Calvin just doesn’t want to compete with.
Calvin must gather the troops and figure out a way to overtake the franchise and keep his barbershop as the place to be in South Chicago.
The big plus to Barbershop 2 is that you get so much Eddie that you can’t stop laughing at his jokes and antics. No one is safe as Eddie once again bashes everyone from Bill Clinton to, dare I say, Luther Vandross. He is also provoked by the newcomer to the neighborhood Queen Latifah in a scene that you will be talking about long after the film is over.
I can’t say enough about this film as I loved it from start to end. The opening scene gives the audience a montage of hair cuts through the ages and the comedy starts with the morphing images of the ever-changing Michael Jackson and the doos he has sported throughout his career.
If Barbershop 2 is any indication of where this series can go, then I say keep ’em coming. It is also important to note that you can look forward to Queen Latifah’s spin-off Beauty Shop later this year.
Now don’t go thinking it will be a flick for chicks as her gaggle of ladies in her shop speak just as frankly as the boys do.
Whether you were a fan of the first one or not Barbershop 2 will not disappoint so be sure to see it.
