Last Christmas 4K Review: Paul Feig’s Holiday Rom-Com

There’s nothing quite like a Christmas rom-com. The holidays are the perfect backdrop for romance, and Paul Feig’s Last Christmas is a wonderful example that takes inspiration from the late George Michael and makes the most of its two charming leads — Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding. The Last Christmas 4K release has finally arrived for the 2019 movie, and it’s an easy recommendation for fans of the holiday film.

“From director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids) and Academy Award-winning screenwriter Emma Thompson (Bridget Jones’s Baby) comes a heartfelt romantic comedy inspired by the unforgettable music of George Michael. Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) stars as Kate, who works as an elf at a year-round holiday shop. Kate faces an endless streak of bad luck and poor decision-making until she meets Tom (Henry Golding, Crazy Rich Asians), a kind-hearted man with a mysterious past who challenges her cynical world view. It seems like nothing can keep this mismatched couple together, but sometimes you gotta listen to your heart, and you gotta have faith,” says the official description.

First off, Last Christmas has a wonderful cast that really boosts the film. Clarke and Golding have irresistible chemistry, and both look stunning in 4K (sometimes you simply want to see beautiful people in the highest definition). Supporting roles feature Rob Delaney, Michelle Yeoh, and the superb Emma Thompson (who co-wrote the film). The film also has some interesting twists throughout, which is a wild ride upon a first watch and really appreciated on subsequent viewings.

Feig (Bridesmaids, A Simple Favor) isn’t the flashiest director, but he’s great at getting the most out of his actors. He also excels at comedy, so there’s no shortage of laughs here. This isn’t his finest work, but it’s still a good time that fits the holiday season well.

The Last Christmas 4K release also comes with a ton of meaningful bonus features as well. This includes a great commentary track by Feig (who is always fun to listen to) and writer Emma Thompson, plus deleted scenes, an alternate opening and ending, a blooper reel, and plenty of featurettes as well. Plus, you get a digital copy along with the 4K and Blu-ray discs, so you’re getting quite the value.

Last Christmas 4K Review: Final Verdict

Christmas movies are inherently rewatchable, as you just want to feel that cheer and familiar embrace during the holiday season. That’s why it’s great to see that the Last Christmas 4K lives up to its potential, bundling up the charming rom-com with a bunch of features. This is a movie you’ll want to break out each year, so it’s an easy recommendation.
