The Intern 4K Review: Robert De Niro & Anne Hathaway’s Chemistry Boosts Comedy

2015’s The Intern had plenty of fans when it was released, grossing nearly $200 million and gaining positive reviews. However, the comedy-drama starring Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway isn’t talked about a ton nearly a decade later, and the newly released The Intern 4K disc gives a good reason to revisit the underrated film by Nancy Meyers.

“From writer/director Nancy Meyers, Robert DeNiro and Anne Hathaway star in The Intern. De Niro portrays Ben Whittaker, a 70-year-old widower who has discovered that retirement isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Seizing an opportunity to get back in the game, he becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site, founded and run by Jules Ostin, portrayed with crackling style by Hathaway,” says the description.

I had a great time watching The Intern 4K, which looks great (who is ever going to complain about seeing Anne Hathaway in 4K?) and really highlights the strong set design in the film. The two stars are fantastic, as getting to see De Niro and Hathaway play off each other is a true joy. The film also has a strong supporting cast with Rene Russo, Adam DeVine, and Anders Holm all giving good performances as well. With a heartfelt and very funny script by Meyers, it’s a shame that we haven’t seen her direct another feature-length film since then.

Fun fact: One of the movie’s biggest fans is actually Quentin Tarantino. The Kill Bill director raved to Metro, “One of my favorite movies this last year was Nancy Meyers’ The Intern. They’re not considering that for the Oscars even though I think Robert De Niro gave one of the best performances this year in that movie. I thought the script was actually one of her best. Right up there with It’s Complicated.” When you watch the film, it’s hard to disagree with him.

While there is sadly no commentary track, The Intern 4K features some worthwhile special features. The most interesting is “Learning From Experience,” which features Meyers and the cast talking about the generational gap and how they used their own lived experience in the film. There’s also a look at the film’s interior design and fashion in “Designs on Life,” and a hilarious interview with Adam DeVine, Zack Pearlman, and Jason Orley called “The Three Interns.”

The Intern 4K Review: Final Verdict

Featuring a sharp script that two great actors wonderfully bring to life, The Intern remains a great watch nine years after release. The Intern 4K also looks great and features some entertaining bonus features as well. It’s well worth the pick-up for fans of the leads or Nancy Meyers.
