Just Mercy 4K Review: Michael B. Jordan Legal Drama Is Still Powerful

The new Just Mercy 4K release brings the Michael B. Jordan drama to UHD for the first time. Featuring a stellar cast that includes Jamie Foxx, Tim Blake Nelson, and Brie Larson, the legal drama shows the true story of defense attorney Bryan Stevenson, who defended African American prisoners on death row and was able to get the wrongful murder conviction of Walter McMillian overturned. Incredibly powerful, the film is just as impactful today as when it was released five years ago.

“In this powerful, thought-provoking true story, recent Harvard graduate Bryan Stevenson passes up lucrative jobs to defend those wrongly condemned in Alabama. Supported by local advocate Eva Ansley, he quickly picks up the incendiary case of Walter McMillian, a death-row inmate convicted of a notorious murder. Facing illegal and political labyrinth and unabashed racism, Bryan fights for Walter and others like him in a system stacked against them,” says the official description.

Just Mercy is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who is best known for his work on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Much like the Marvel movie, Cretton does a great job of getting phenomenal performances from his cast. Jordan gives a phenomenal performance, which won him an NAACP Image award, and Jamie Foxx is just as great as the wrongly convicted Walter McMillian. It’s an incredible true story, which is gripping from start to finish and shows the effects of systemic racism on the United States legal system.

The Just Mercy 4K release looks and sounds great, as the legal drama is wonderfully shot by Cretton. It also includes quite a few special features with eight deleted scenes and an eight-minute video on the Equal Justice Initiative that Stevenson founded. There’s also a six-minute video, “This Moment Deserves,” that features the cast and crew discussing the film’s themes and true story, and a quick four-minute featurette titled “Making Mercy” that gives a glimpse at the behind-the-scenes production.

Just Mercy 4K Review: Final Verdict

The Just Mercy 4K is the best way to watch the legal drama, which is still powerful and looks at the systemic racism that African American prisoners face. The film is anchored by incredible performances by Jordan and Foxx and shows that Cretton can do much more than just superhero movies. It’s a worthwhile watch and highlights a story worth telling.
