Universal Pictures Plans Uglydoll Feature Film

Universal Partnerships & Licensing today announced it has entered into a representation agreement with Pretty Ugly, LLC, the creators of the popular Uglydoll brand, to expand the digital category of the imaginative Uglydoll world, or “Uglyverse.” Universal will launch interactive and wireless content, such as apps, games, widgets and virtual goods. A feature film based on the Uglydoll characters is currently in development at Illumination Entertainment, Universal Pictures’ main supplier of family and animated films. The film will be produced by Illumination founder Chris Meledandri (Despicable Me, Hop, Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax), and distributed worldwide by Universal.

The husband and wife artist team of David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim created the Uglydoll characters in 2001, and since then, the franchise has become a worldwide success with an extensive line of licensed products and publishing. In collaboration with Pretty Ugly, Universal is taking the brand into the digital realm for the first time.

“Uglydoll is a beloved brand and a household name around the globe,” said Stephanie Sperber, President, Universal Partnerships & Licensing. “The unique world in which these distinctive characters exist will translate perfectly across digital platforms and our goal will be to find digital creative partners committed to maintaining the Uglydoll voice and staying true to the Uglydoll’s core independent spirit.”

“We are exhilarated to work with Universal on this partnership and amuse our fans with exciting, fresh and hilarious content,” said Alita Friedman, Chief Brand Officer, Pretty Ugly, LLC. “Uglydoll is sure to captivate a wide audience and bring new life to our jovial characters through groundbreaking new ways to play in the dynamic digital environment.”

Since the inception of the first character, Wage, who David drew on a love letter to Sun-Min, Uglydoll has grown into an entire universe of characters, stories, and products including toys, plush, apparel and accessories. Uglydoll branded items are sold to retailers worldwide.
