Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle Box Office Champ Again

For the second weekend in a row, Columbia Pictures‘ Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle topped the domestic box office with $27 million for Friday through Sunday and an estimated $33.4 million over the four-day Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. The film, made for $90 million, will reach $289.5 million in North America through Monday. Directed by Jake Kasdan, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle stars Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Nick Jonas, and Bobby Cannavale.

Steven Spielberg’s The Post (20th Century Fox), starring Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep, increased its theater count to 2,819 theaters (last weekend it was in 36 theaters) and placed second with $18.6 million through Sunday. It is expected to gross $22.2 million for the four days. The film received an A CinemaScore from audiences and cost $50 million to make.

Lionsgate’s The Commuter opened in third place with an estimated $13.5 million from Friday to Saturday in 2,892 theaters, an average of $4,651 per location. The four-day expected total is $16 million. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, the action thriller stars Liam Neeson, Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Sam Neill, and Elizabeth McGovern. The Commuter received a B CinemaScore.

Its second weekend, Insidious: The Last Key (Universal Pictures) dropped two spots to fourth place with $12.1 million ($14.1 million for the four-day holiday). Through Sunday, the horror film has grossed $48.4 million. Made for just $10 million, Insidious: The Last Key was directed by Adam Robitel and stars Lin Shaye, Angus Sampson, Leigh Whannell, Josh Stewart, Caitlin Gerard, Kirk Acevedo, Javier Botet, Bruce Davison, Spencer Locke, Tessa Ferrer, Ava Kolker, and Marcus Henderson.

The Greatest Showman (20th Century Fox) rounded out the top five with $11.8 million and a total of $94.5 million after four weeks. The weekend total through Monday is expected to be $14.5 million. Directed by Michael Gracey, The Greatest Showman stars Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, and Zendaya. It was made for $84 million.

Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi dropped three spots to sixth with $11.3 million through Sunday ($14.7 million over the four days), for a domestic total of $591.5 million. Internationally, The Last Jedi added $19 million and has earned $673.4 million, bringing its worldwide total to $1.265 billion. The film has passed Disney’s own Beauty and the Beast ($1.264 billion) to climb to the 10th spot on the all-time worldwide list and has become the No. 1 global release of 2017. Domestically, The Last Jedi stands as the No. 6 release of all time. Written and directed by Rian Johnson, Star Wars: The Last Jedi stars Mark Hamill, the late Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Lupita Nyong’o, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Benicio Del Toro, Laura Dern, and Kelly Marie Tran.

Paddington 2 (Warner Bros. Pictures) has been playing internationally since November (where its earned $125.5 million) and finally came to these shores this weekend. The sequel, which received an A CinemaScore, debuted in seventh place with $10.6 million. The Paul King-directed family film stars Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Brendan Gleeson, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Peter Capaldi, Hugh Grant, and Ben Whishaw.

Sony’s new thriller Proud Mary, starring Taraji P. Henson, opened in eighth place with $10 million ($12 million through Monday) from 2,125 theaters, an average of $4,706 per site. Made for just $14 million, the film got a B+ CinemaScore from audiences.

In the ninth spot, Universal Pictures’ Pitch Perfect 3 added $5.7 million to bring its four-week total to $94.7 million. Internationally, Pitch Perfect 3 has earned $67.7 million. The sequel, made for $45 million, was directed by Trish Sie and stars Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Hailee Steinfeld, Brittany Snow, Anna Camp, John Lithgow, DJ Khaled, Hana Mae Lee, Ruby Rose, Alexis Knapp, Chrissie Fit, Ester Dean, Shelley Regner, Kelley Jakle, John Michael Higgins, and Elizabeth Banks.

Universal Pictures’ Pitch Perfect 3 added $10.2 million this weekend to take its total to $85.9 million after three weeks. The film’s international total is up to $55 million, for a worldwide sum of $141 million. The sequel, made for $45 million, was directed by Trish Sie and stars Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Hailee Steinfeld, Brittany Snow, Anna Camp, John Lithgow, DJ Khaled, Hana Mae Lee, Ruby Rose, Alexis Knapp, Chrissie Fit, Ester Dean, Shelley Regner, Kelley Jakle, John Michael Higgins, and Elizabeth Banks.

The Darkest Hour (Focus Features) got tenth place with $4.5 million and has earned $35.7 million. Directed by Joe Wright, the drama stars Gary Oldman, Kristin Scott Thomas, Lily James, Stephen Dillane, Ronald Pickup, and Ben Mendelsohn.
