The Shallows’ Jaume Collet-Serra is reportedly the frontrunner to helm the Suicide Squad sequel
A new frontrunner has reportedly emerged to direct Warner Bros. Pictures‘ upcoming Suicide Squad sequel as Deadline brings word that The Shallows‘ Jaume Collet-Serra may be the man for the job. The sequel is moving forward with a script by Zak Penn, with tentative plans to film next year.

Directed by David Ayer, the first Suicide Squad stars Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Adam Beach, Jai Courtney, Viola Davis, Cara Delevingne, Karen Fukuhara, Jay Hernandez, Joel Kinnaman, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie and Will Smith, most of whom are likely to return for the big screen follow-up. The 2016 original wound up bringing in more than $745 million at the worldwide box office.
Jaume Collet-Serra’s other big screen credits include Orphan and quite a few projects with Academy Award nominee Liam Neeson. Following their first teaming on 2011’s Unknown, Collet-Serra and Neeson again teamed for 2014’s Non-Stop and 2015’s Run All Night. Their fourth collaboration, The Commuter, is set to hit the big screen January 12, 2018 through Lionsgate.
Previous reports have suggested names like Ruben Fleischer, Mel Gibson, Jonathan Levine and Daniel Espinosa as potential Suicide Squad 2 helmers. Check back for official confirmation on whoever winds up taking the job when it becomes available.
