Doug Liman Exits Justice League Dark Movie

Doug Liman is no longer attached to direct the Justice League Dark movie

Director Doug Liman will not be helming the upcoming Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Comics adaptation, Justice League Dark, Variety reports. The Edge of Tomorrow helmer had signed on direct the feature (then titled Dark Universe) last August, after departing another comic book adaptation, 20th Century Fox‘s X-Men movies spinoff, Gambit.

According to the trade, Liman’s departure from the Justice League Dark movie is due to his commitments to the upcoming Lionsgate film Chaos Walking. Based on the bestselling book series by Patrick Ness, Chaos Walking is set to star Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland.

The comic book Justice League Dark team made their debut during DC’s “New 52” publishing initiative in 2011. A paranormal-leaning super team, the group featured the likes of John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Zatanna, Frankenstein, Deadman, Madame Xanadu, and The Phantom Stranger among its ranks. Prior to Liman’s involvement, Guillermo del Toro had been attached to direct the Justice League Dark movie with all sorts of rumors swirling about who he planned to feature in the film’s cast.

Although the Justice League Dark movie was previously known as Dark Universe, Universal Pictures appears to have now officially claimed that name for their upcoming Universal monsterverse. Alex Kurtzman’s The Mummy, in theaters June 9, will mark the first film to officially debut as a Dark Universe film. Whether or not the Justice League Dark movie winds up taking on a new title remains to be seen, but check back for updates as they become available as WB is reportedly expecting to announce a replacement soon.
