Focus Features nabs the rights to the Diablo Cody-penned Tully starring Charlize Theron
Focus Features has announced that it has acquired the rights to Academy Award-nominated Jason Reitman‘s film Tully. The comedy, with a screenplay by Academy Award winner Diablo Cody, stars Academy Award winner Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road, the upcoming Atomic Blonde), Mackenzie Davis (The Martian), Mark Duplass (The League), and Ron Livingston (Office Space). The film will premiere in U.S. theaters on April 20, 2018.
Tully tells the story of Marlo (Theron), a mother of three including a newborn, who is gifted a night nanny by her brother (Duplass). Hesitant to the extravagance at first, Marlo comes to form a unique bond with the thoughtful, surprising, and sometimes challenging young nanny named Tully (Davis).
Tully is produced by Bron Studios’ Aaron L. Gilbert; Reitman and Helen Estabrook through their Right of Way Productions; Cody and Mason Novick; and Theron, A.J. Dix and Beth Kono through Denver & Delilah Productions. Bron Studios’ involvement with the film was announced almost a year to the day on May 6, 2016.
The film marks a reunion for Reitman, Estabrook, Cody, Novick and Theron, who previously collaborated on Young Adult, for which Theron was a Golden Globe Award nominee. Cody and Reitman also collaborated on Juno, for which Cody won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
“We’re thrilled to be teaming up with Jason for the first time after being long admirers of his witty, inspired filmmaking, and once again with Charlize following last year’s award-winning Kubo and the Two Strings and this year’s much-anticipated Atomic Blonde,” said Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski. “She gives another captivating performance in Tully under Jason’s direction and Diablo’s words that find the perfect balance between comedy and emotion.”
