Writer and director Julia Ducournau’s horrifying Raw movie hits theaters early next year
Focus World, owned and operated by Focus Features, has set a domestic theatrical release date for writer/director Julia Ducournau’s award-winning Raw movie. The film famously had the paramedics arriving at the Toronto International Film Festival after the psychological horror thriller led to audience members passing out.
The Raw movie will open in select cities on Friday, March 10, 2017. Following the movie’s theatrical run, the title will be on digital platforms months later, in the summer.
Garance Marillier portrays the teenaged Justine, who commences her studies at veterinary school to follow in her family members’ footsteps. Raised as a vegetarian, Justine is pressured at school to try meat for the first time. Once she does, she plumbs both the depths of her own soul and tests the limits of her darkest cravings.
Earlier this month, the Raw movie won the Sutherland Award for Best First Feature at the BFI London Film Festival. The prize follows other accolades for the Raw movie from film festivals around the world, where it has proved to be a fan and industry favorite. Raw won the Best Director award at Fantastic Fest‘s “Next Wave” competition; the Golden Octopus Award and the Audience Award at the Strasbourg European Fantastic Film Festival; and three prizes at the Sitges-Catalonian International Film Festival, including the Citizen Kane Award for Best Up-and-Coming Director, the Méliès d’Argent Award for Best Feature-Length European Film, and the Carnet Jove Jury Award for Best Feature-Length Film.
The Petit Film/Rouge Internationa FraKas Productions film world-premiered at the 2016 Cannes International Film Festival in the International Critics’ Week section, where it won the FIPRESCI Prize. Produced by Petit Film’s Jean des Forêts, the French-language Raw movie marks the debut feature from Ms. Ducournau.
