20th Century Fox‘s new Tim Burton film, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, opened in first place at the domestic box office with an estimated $28.5 million from 3,522 theaters, an average of $8,092 per theater. Internationally, Miss Peregrine earned $36.5 million from 8,954 screens in 59 markets, for a global weekend of $65 million. An adaptation of the Ransom Rigg book, the film received a B+ CinemaScore from audiences. Made for about $110 million, Miss Peregrine stars Eva Green, Asa Butterfield, Chris O’Dowd, Ella Purnell, Allison Janney, Rupert Everett, Terence Stamp, Judi Dench and Samuel L. Jackson.
Lionsgate’s Deepwater Horizon debuted in second place at the North American box office with $20.6 million from 3,259 theaters, an average of $6,321 per location. $2.7 million of the domestic weekend total came from 373 IMAX screens, while the film earned $3.7 million worldwide on 492 IMAX screens. Directed by Peter Berg, the film tells the story of the 2010 Gulf of Mexico disaster and stars Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, Dylan O’Brien, Gina Rodriguez and Kate Hudson. Also made for $110 million, the film received an A- CinemaScore.
Dropping two spots to third, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures and Columbia Pictures’ The Magnificent Seven added $15.7 million its second weekend for a total of $61.6 million domestically. Made for $90 million, Antoine Fuqua’s modern remake of the western classic stars Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Byung-Hun Lee, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Martin Sensmeier, Haley Bennett, Matt Bomer and Peter Sarsgaard.
Warner Bros.’ animated adventure Storks took fourth place and grossed $13.8 million for a domestic total of $38.8 million after two weeks. Internationally, the $70 million film added $14.6 million from 47 markets. The international total stands at $38.8 million overseas and worldwide sum at $77.6 million. Storks is voiced by Andy Samberg, Kelsey Grammer, Katie Crown, Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Danny Trejo, Ty Burrell and Jennifer Aniston.
Warner Bros.’ Sully rounded out the top five in North America with $8.4 million its fourth weekend, for a total of $105.4 million so far. Internationally, the Clint Eastwood-directed film earned another $6.6 million from 46 territories to push its total to $46.3 million overseas and $151.7 million worldwide. Made for $60 million, Sully stars Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart and Laura Linney.
Relativity Studios also released the action-comedy Masterminds into 3,042 theaters, but the film managed only a sixth-place finish with $6.6 million. Receiving a B- CinemaScore, the Jared Hess-directed film stars Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and Jason Sudeikis.
Expanding into 1,242 theaters, Disney’s Queen of Katwe earned $2.6 million. Made for $15 million and directed by Mira Nair, the film received stars David Oyelowo, Lupita Nyong’o, and Madina Nalwanga.
