Sully Flies to $35.5 Million to Top Box Office

Warner Bros. PicturesSully opened bigger than expected with an estimated $35.5 million in first place. The Clint Eastwood-directed film, starring Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart and Laura Linney, played in 3,525 theaters where it averaged $10,072 per location. Internationally, the film grossed $9.5 million in 39 markets, for a global weekend of $45 million. Audiences gave the film an A CinemaScore, Made for about $60 million, Sully is the first Hollywood film shot exclusively with IMAX cameras. It earned $4 million from 375 domestic IMAX screens and $1.1 million from 148 IMAX screens.

Debuting in second place, Screen Gems’ When the Bough Breaks grossed $15 million from 2,246 theaters, an average of $6,679. Directed by Jon Cassar, the thriller stars Morris Chestnut, Regina Hall and Jaz Sinclair. The film cost just $10 million to make and received a B CinemaScore.

Screen Gems also was in third place with Don’t Breathe, which added $8.2 million for a total of $66.8 million after three weeks. Made for less than $10 million, Don’t Breathe was directed by Fede Alvarez and stars Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette, Daniel Zovatto and Stephen Lang.

Dropping two spots to fourth, Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad grossed $5.6 million its sixth weekend to take its domestic total to $307.4 million. Overseas, the David Ayer comic book adaptation added $10.1 million from 64 territories to take its total to $392 million. With a worldwide total of $699.4 million through Sunday, the film will surpass the $700 million mark tomorrow. Made for $175 million, Suicide Squad stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood, Cara Delevingne, Adam Beach, and Karen Fukuhara.

Rounding out the top five was Lionsgate’s new animated release, The Wild Life, but it barely made a dent with just $3.4 million from 2,493 theaters, an average of just $1,364. It received a B- CinemaScore.

Relativity Studios’ The Disappointments Room also opened with just $1.4 million from 1,554 theaters, an average of $901 per theater. The thriller, starring Kate Beckinsale, received a D CinemaScore.
