Warner Bros. Pictures‘ Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice added $52.4 million domestically its second weekend to take its total to $261.5 million. While it will be reported that this is a big 68% drop, last weekend’s $166.1 million opening did have the $27.7 million from Thursday previews included. Internationally, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice earned $85 million this weekend for an overseas total of $419.8 million and a worldwide total of $681.3 million after a week and a half, including $85 million from China. In comparison, the Zack Snyder-directed Man of Steel earned a total of $668 million worldwide in 2013.
$53.4 million of the $681 million worldwide total has come from IMAX theaters. For the domestic weekend, 388 IMAX screens grossed $4.2 million, hitting a total of $25.3 million. For the overseas markets, 571 IMAX screens earned $5.8 million, sending the overseas total to $28.1 million.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice cost $250 million to make before marketing and earned a B CinemaScore from audiences last weekend. The film stars Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman, Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, with Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane returning from Man of Steel, joined by Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, Holly Hunter as Senator Finch, as well as Scoot McNairy, Callan Mulvey and Tao Okamoto.
In Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante, fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.
Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Zootopia continued to perform exceptionally well worldwide, posting a global weekend estimate of $50 million. The animated hit earned $20 million domestically in second place (a dip of just 16.7% from last weekend) and it took in $30 million overseas. The domestic total is now up to $275.9 million and the international sum to $511.7 million for a worldwide total of $787.6 million since beginning its international run in February. In China alone, Zootopia has earned an impressive $215.3 million, and it still hasn’t opened in Japan. The movie features the voices of Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, J.K. Simmons, Idris Elba, Alan Tudyk, Tommy Chong, Octavia Spencer, Bonnie Hunt, Jenny Slate, Tommy ‘Tiny’ Lister, Don Lake, and Raymond Persi.
Third place in North America belonged to Universal’s My Big Fat Greek Wedding, which earned $11.1 million its second weekend for a total of $36.5 million. Internationally, the sequel has earned $18.4 million for a global total of $54.9 million. The film stars Nia Vardalos, John Corbett, Lainie Kazan, Gia Carides, Joey Fatone, Elena Kampouris, Alex Wolff, Louis Mandylor, Bess Meisler, Bruce Gray, Fiona Reid, Ian Gomez, Jayne Eastwood, Mark Margolis, Andrea Martin and Michael Constantine.
Opening in fourth place was Pure Film Entertainment’s follow-up God’s Not Dead 2, which earned an estimated $8.1 million from 2,419 theaters, an average of $3,350 per theater. The first film debuted with $9.2 million in 2014 from just 780 theaters.
Sony Pictures’ Miracles from Heaven rounded out the top five with $7.55 million its third weekend for a total of $46.8 million. Directed by Patricia Riggen, the $13-million budgeted film stars Jennifer Garner, Kylie Rogers, Martin Henderson, John Carroll Lynch, Eugenio Derbez and Queen Latifah.
In sixth place, The Divergent Series: Allegiant earned $5.7 million for a domestic total of $56.4 million after three weeks. Allegiant, directed by Robert Schwentke, stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James. The last film in the franchise, Insurgent, earned $130.2 million domestically.
20th Century Fox’s Deadpool, which announced its Blu-ray and DVD release last week, remained in the top 10 with another $3.5 million for a domestic total of $355.1 million after eight weeks. Internationally, Deadpool has earned $399.3 million for a worldwide total of $752 million. Starring Ryan Reynolds, the comic book adaptation cost just $58 million to make before marketing.
As far as the other newcomers, Freestyle Releasing parody Meet the Blacks opened in eighth place to just $4.1 million from 1,015 theaters, an average of $4,026 per theater. The Richard Linklater-directed Everybody Wants Some!! opened to $323,000 from 19 theaters, an average of $17,000, while Don Cheadle’s Miles Ahead earned $122,751 from just four theaters, a strong average of $30,688 per site.
