In response to widespread demand and box-office success, IMAX and 20th Century Fox today announced that Fox’s global box-office smash hit, The Martian, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damon, will receive a special limited-time engagement IMAX release domestically, as well as in China and across other select international markets.
The film’s domestic IMAX 3D run is set for one week beginning Oct. 30, with some international IMAX dates opening mid-October through November.
“With unprecedented demand from exhibition to put this film on IMAX screens, we are excited to offer audiences the opportunity to see The Martian in these venues,” said Chris Aronson, President of Domestic Distribution, Twentieth Century Fox.

The IMAX release of The Martian is shown in its digitally re-mastered format, which includes the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience with proprietary IMAX DMR (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images, coupled with IMAX’s customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio, create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.
During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission.
